5 Tips to Make Your Blog Successful

I know success is subjective, but these tips are the foundation for any kind of success you want with your blog.

I just passed my third blogging birthday, and I couldn’t be more proud. When I started my blog, I imagined I would use it as a creative outlet and a way of connecting with others. Over the past three years it’s grown into so much more.

Maybe that’s why you’re here: you’ve started or are planning on starting a blog and you want to see where it could possibly take you. The answer: anywhere.

Through this blog I’ve met my goal of connecting with others and using it as an outlet. However it’s also helped me introduce myself to clients, acquire multiple freelancing positions, and really allowed me to push forward my purpose of helping others and sharing information about nutrition, holistic wellness, and mental health.

The purpose of sharing these tips is that I also want to help you meet your goals and more through blogging.

5 Best Blogging Tips to Make Your Blog Successful

1. Start with Passion and Purpose

This first tip is really about the foundation of your blog. Your blog should relate to your passion. For instance, you won’t find me writing about sports or scrapbooking. Why? Because I’m not passionate about those topics! If you don’t really care about the content you’re making, your motivation is sure to drop off, and eventually your blog along with it.

Not only does writing about a topic that your passionate about bring you a sense of motivation and attachment, but when you write on a topic that you really care about, your readers pick up on it. There is a certain energy portrayed — even in writing — and your readers will feel your enthusiasm if it’s there.

Having a purpose behind your blog is also so important, so keep that in mind when writing your content. You must be really clear about what your goal is, and what you want to convey to the reader. Being clear about this will also help your reader find you — and hopefully fall in love with your information and the way you share it!

If you’ve found your purpose and you’re passionate about it: awesome — you’ve got step one nailed down. If you’re still figuring it out, don’t rush. Do some reflecting and ask yourself: who am I, and what do I really care about?

2. Know Your stuff

Starting and maintaining a blog takes way more learning than I originally thought. Firstly, lets talk content: it’s really important that you know your subject matter. If you start talking about a topic but you don’t really know the ins-and-outs of, it will be hard to maintain a level of trust with your readers. In order for your readers to be able to rely on you and to cultivate this relationship of trust, you need to be confident in your words.

This might require research, including reading academic papers, and citing reputable sources. It might include an immersive experience of your own. One way or another, if you want to product quality posts, it will require digging, investigating, and maybe even some doing. You should be willing to do it so you can bring the most valuable, reliable, and up-to-date information to your readers.

3. Get to Know Your Audience

Behind any great blog is a sense of community. Your readers should feel right at home on your blog. You can establish this by getting to know your audience. How? Talk with your readers, get to know them. Better yet, read what your readers write! Many of your readers will be fellow bloggers and if nothing else you can always connect with them on that level.

You should also get to know what kind of content your readers look for. Check into your insights if your platform allows it. It will take a while, and quite a bit of published content, but you will start to see a trend towards what your readers are most interested in. Being aware of what your audience wants helps you continue to provide the exact kind of information they are looking for.

I think this is a place where a lot of bloggers get stuck. Whether it’s writers block or indecision, it’s easy to let a lot of time go by between posts. My tip? Don’t be afraid to open up to feedback and ask your audience: What can I offer you? Put out a poll on social media and ask what your followers would most like to read.

4. Read Other Blogs

If you are starting a blog, you should already be reading other blogs. See what blogging is all about, is what successful blogs look like. Knowing what you like to read can help you develop your own personal style. Plus, commenting and engaging with other bloggers can help you create valuable connections with like-minded individuals.

Read other blogs. Compare, contrast, and draw inspiration. And when I say draw inspiration — that’s what I really mean. Don’t copy! Be authentically you and find your space in the blogosphere, amongst all the other great blogs out there.

Never go to other blogs for competition or comparison. Even bloggers in similar niches have different ideas and different ways of delivering those ideas. There is room for all of us, trust me!

5. Don’t Stop Blogging!

If you want to create a successful blog, you must take this tip to heart. You must keep blogging. If you fall off the blogging horse for a few weeks, get back on! You can’t expect anybody to be invested in your blog if you aren’t. Decide when you start your blog that you are going to commit to it, and have the integrity to see it through.

If being consistent is something you struggle with, try making a goal. For example, decide you will publish a post “every Monday and Friday”. You could even make a less specific goal of publishing content twice per week, whenever. Decide what works best for you and stick to it.

With effort and consistency, your blog will make it. Without effort and consistency, it won’t — no matter how great you are or your content is. Time and effort also increases the amount of published content you have, and the more published content you have, the more you have to offer to your audience.

What this last tip is really all about is investment; invest in your blog and you will see the return.
